X-Tale is an AU created by Jael Peñaloza, otherwise known as Jakei95 on Tumblr and Youtube. It is fractured into many parts: the comic, the animation series Underverse, another comic named X-Tale - 21 Years, which is a collection of stories prior to X-Tale, and another animation series about the ten different timelines.
X-Tale takes place in a post-pacifist timeline, where most of the main cast has become part of the Royal Guard including Sans, Mettaton and even Muffet.
Most of X-Tale is monochromatic, with some shades of yellow, purple, and red.
X-Tale brings the concept of a power known as OVERWRITE. It allows the person to OVERWRITE certain objects within a timeline itself or the AU if the user has the full soul of OVERWRITE, allowing the user to change the stories and its characters. It may also be possible to destroy a timeline or an AU itself with OVERWRITE; examples include the Underswap AU, and possibly the X-Tale AU.
Characters[]
XGaster[]
XGaster is the creator of the X-Tale AU, and a bit of a perfectionist. With the power of OVERWRITE, he can edit and change the entirety of the universe to his will. He only believes in the use of the OVERWRITE button, considering RESETs messy and that they only create garbage due to the fact they create an alternate timeline.
In the beginning, XGaster used his power of OVERWRITE for a good reason, wanting to create the perfect universe for his two children X!Chara and X!Frisk. He becomes so distraught about the fact he can't create a good enough universe that he's ready to destroy his own SOUL, until Ink!Sans arrives and helps him back on his feet by showing him all the alternate universes for inspiration.
As time goes on and XGaster continues to OVERWRITE X-Tale again and again, he becomes colder and more perfectionist, ignoring and even abusing his children for being in the way of his goal to create the perfect universe. He leaves half of his own SOUL in Ink's care, knowing full well that something would happen to him in the future.
At the end of Timeline X, XGaster is nearly destroyed by his own creations, only to escape upon Cross/X!Sans' arrival.
X!Asriel[]
In some timelines, X!Asriel is meant to be a brother to X!Chara and X!Frisk, and the both of them loved him as if he was no different from them. He lives to maintain the peace between humans and monsters, believing they can all be together.
In X-Tale, Asriel was never Flowey, although XGaster can OVERWRITE him into an Exterminator form, or Flowey X; a giant plant mass that bears similarity to Photoshop Flowey. XGaster likes to think of X!Asriel as his favourite weapon, rather than a person.
X!Asgore[]
X!Asgore plays a role as a loving and adoptive father to X!Chara and X!Frisk, bonding well with the former. XGaster dislikes him greatly, as Asgore is very kind to everyone despite how terrible his life could be. He helps Chara through his pain, telling him not to let the past control him or hold him down.
After Timeline X, X!Asgore becomes a much angrier and remorseful being upon learning of the Multiverse.
X!Toriel[]
X!Toriel is meant to be the adoptive mother of X!Chara and X!Frisk. While X!Asgore created a strong bond with Chara, she formulated one with Frisk. She is a very stern but loving mother, and a strong queen.
After Timeline X, Toriel is aware of everything that happened in Classic Undertale, including the fates of X!Asriel and X!Chara, and how her relationship with Asgore crumbled. Despite this, she only wishes to see them in a positive light, refusing to physically open her eyes and face the world around her.
X!Muffet[]
In most of the timelines, X!Muffet is no more than a simple, kind baker, although she is part of the Royal Guard in Timeline X. In Timeline IV's genocide alternate, she learns about what XGaster is doing because of X!Alphys, and encourages X!Chara to rebel against him.
X!Muffet has a couple of interesting abilities, such as administering a hallucinogenic poison and stopping time temporarily.
X!Undyne[]
In X-Tale, Undyne is the first of XGaster's creations to ever fight back against him. She is a powerful and agile fighter, and trains X!Chara to fight back against XGaster, including teaching him how to summon knives out of DETERMINATION.
After Timeline X, X!Undyne becomes one of XGaster's personal bodyguards along with Papyrus. Despite all her happy memories with Alphys being false, Undyne still harbors feelings for for the assistant. However, she no longer believes in the concept of justice, only doing what she is commanded to.
X!Chara[]
X!Frisk's older brother. Once being happy, X!Chara became hateful towards XGaster and his ways, becoming determined to stop it once and for all. After Timeline IV's genocide alternate, Chara's DETERMINATION allowed him to use the RESET, much to XGaster's disdain. He becomes very interested in Chara's DETERMINATION however, even taking half of X!Chara's SOUL and replacing it with part of his own.
In Timeline VII, X!Chara's SOUL was placed in X!Frisk's body, turning them into the X-Event. While Chara couldn't do much other than exist, he was always capable of talking to Frisk, often guiding and telling his younger brother what to do. After Timeline X, Cross/X!Sans takes X!Chara's SOUL from X!Frisk's body and became the new X-Event, now having to deal with Chara's spirit speaking to him.
X!Frisk[]
The younger brother to X!Chara, X!Frisk maintained a passive attitude towards XGaster's abusive actions towards him and his brother, although he was secretly filled with hatred for the man. After XGaster OVERWRITEs him for a genocidal alternative, it breaks Frisk's will and his DETERMINATION leaves him.
Because of X!Frisk's complete and utter refusal to do anything, not even fighting back when X!Chara attacks and kills him repeatedly, XGaster was ready to erase him from the X-Tale universe entirely. However, due to Chara's pleas, he instead turns X!Frisk into a vessel for X!Chara's SOUL and having them be one individual, as it was in the 'Original Universe'. This lead to the creation the X-Event, XGaster's biggest experiment.
The X-Event[]
The X-Event is XGaster's ultimate experiment, having X!Frisk's body, half of XGaster's SOUL, and half of X!Chara's SOUL. The purpose of the experiment was to give a human with DETERMINATION the ability to use the OVERWRITE button, and give it the chance to create. However, he glazes over if not directly rejects anything and everything the X-Event creates.
Despite still being a human child (or at least resembling one, as the power of XGaster's SOUL stops them from aging), the X-Event is only referred to as 'it' by XGaster, only being seen as a tool to achieve his goal of the perfect universe.
When Cross/X!Sans destroys Frisks' body at the end of X-Tale, he takes Chara's SOUL and becomes the new X-Event.
X!Mettaton[]
X!Mettaton was an old, scrapped idea of XGaster's that never saw the light of day. When the X-Event is learning how to create and use the OVERWRITE button, they use the idea and create Mettaton, an unstoppable Royal Guard with an insatiable appetite.
While XGaster silently finds X!Mettaton interesting, he still has Mettaton destroyed. In the creation's final version, X!Mettaton is a general and leader of the Royal Guard, armed with an energy saber capable of slicing through nearly anything. He primarily eats the SOULs of humans and monsters to run, but also has a backup battery.
X!Papyrus[]
X!Papyrus is a creation of both XGaster and the X-Event. He is very kind and optimistic, not unlike the original, even surprising XGaster himself with his positive outlook. Papyrus can be stern and serious, often saying things that no one would expect from him. He is a strong fighter and very protective of those he cares for. He will not hesitate to fight those who threaten his friends' safety.
XGaster feels a connection to X!Papyrus, seeing an innocent and pure side he had lost in himself long ago. After Timeline X, Papyrus feels a mixture of remorse and disappoinment towards Cross/X!Sans, having been killed by him during the last timeline. He is currently one of XGaster's personal bodyguards along with X!Undyne.
Cross/X!Sans[]
X!Sans is his lazy old self, enjoying hanging around with his friends and doing absolutely nothing. During the events of Timeline X, Sans becomes a Royal Guard along with his brother X!Papyrus to help protect Frisk from the attacking humans.
He considers X!Frisk a dear friend until Frisk brings back his memories and forces X!Sans to kill him, albeit. In a fight after, he receives a red scar under his right eye and the nickname Cross. After the X-Event re-activates everyone's memories, they attack the newly dubbed Cross. When they go after XGaster in the castle, Cross arrives and decimates everyone there, under the assumption he can bring everyone back after taking X!Chara's SOUL. He's wrong, and is left in an empty white void until being found by Ink!Sans.
X!Alphys[]
XGaster created X!Alphys for the sole purpose of being his assistant, collecting data and taking his notes. While she is loyal for the most part, XGaster discovers that she had given information to X!Muffet in Timeline IV and helped plot against him in Timeline V. Because of this, he OVERWRITEs X!Alphys to be nothing but loyal.
X!Alphys is capable of thinking for herself, but is only loyal to her 'Lord' XGaster and does not wish to get in his way or go against him.
