Underwhirl is an Undertale AU created by SnasUndertable on Tumblr. Similar to Storyshift or TS!Underswap, characters change places role-wise without changing personalites and the changes affecting the world around them. Unlike the other role-swapping AUs, the roles are swapped individually, rather than in pairs.
Character Changes[]
Frisk[]
Frisk still has the role of the Protagonist, functioning about the same as they do in Undertale.
Napstablook[]
Napstablook has the role of the Caretaker. They live alone in a rundown house in the Ruins and are in a deep depression.
Toriel[]
Toriel takes the role of the Recluse. Mother of Asriel and Chara and estranged wife of Asgore. Runs Dreemurr Acres in Waterfall and visits the Ruins often.
Alphys[]
Alphys takes the role of the Judge. Lives in Snowdin with her girlfriend, Undyne. Stays with her in Asriel's guest room. Uses technology to measure Frisk's STATS.
Asriel[]
Asriel takes the role of the Ambitious and is second-in-command of the Royal Guard. Commander of the Snowdin Unit, his friend Alphys helps him "defend" the town.
Grillby[]
Grillby is the Captain of the Guard. Doesn't talk much and usually lets Asriel take command.
Sans[]
Sans is the Royal Scientist and current head of Gastech Industries. Hired into the position for being the head of the foremost technological company. Despite this, he doesn't take the job very seriously.
Chara[]
Chara takes the role of the Celebrity. Still appears quite young due to cybernetics from their friend Sans. Adoptive child of the Dreemurrs and still has a deep hatred of humanity.
Muffet[]
Muffet takes the role of the Monarch. Queen of the Underground and the last member of the Triumvirate, the former ruling council.
Undyne[]
Undyne takes the role of the Restaurant Owner. Runs her own bar in Snowdin. Despite owning a restaurant, she and Alphys don't have a house and live with Asriel. Dislikes humans and Chara's shows, preferring to show anime instead.
Asgore[]
Asgore takes the role of the Outrageous Vendor. Runs a small flower and tea stall in Hotland, which unfortunately doesn't make much of a profit. His generosity in giving out flowers and the unpopularity of hot tea have contributed to his lack of success.
Papyrus[]
Papyrus takes the role of the Soulless Angel. Goes by the name Flowery. Victim of the Accident.
Mettaton[]
Mettacrit takes the role of the Fallen. Narrates the game for Frisk. Victim of the Accident
Location Changes[]
Ruins[]
The Ruins are much more, well, ruined. Crumbling walls, more leaf piles, and cobwebs all contribute to a more haunted feel. The final house is very rundown, with peeling wallpaper and broken floorboards.
Snowdin[]
Several building in Snowdin Town have changed.
- Undyne's is a bar with a dive feel. Several TVs showing various anime playing at all time.
- Asriel's house looks about the same as the Skelebros's house on the outside, minus the flag. The inside is much more neat, with a green carpet and beige walls. Asriel's room has is far less playful than Papyrus's, lacking the race car bed and action figures. Instead, the room has a much more celestial theme, with a star map on the wall and rainbow bed sheets. Alphys's and Undyne's room is fairly messy, with an unkempt double bed along the right wall. Two computers on desks sit nearby to a large TV.
Waterfall[]
In Waterfall, the Quiet Water area has the most drastic changes.
- Grillby has a house resembling a large bonfire, with the entrance being in between two sticks. The interior has wood paneling (fireproofed of course) and a massive kitchen taking up most of the space.
- Dreemurr Acres Snail Farm consists of two houses, both purple. The left one is fairly crowded by three beds, one double and two singles. A fridge filled with sweets sits nearby to an old TV. The right house has a single mattress on the floor and many flower pots scattered about. Another old TV sits on a short table, with a collection of tapes stacked on top.
Hotland[]
Hotland has the most changes out of anywhere.
- The Lab has a large sign outside labelled GASTECH. Inside is a large monitor and a desk covered in various condiment bottles. A computer sits on the desk with a screensaver of a hot dog bouncing around. Upstairs is Sans's bedroom, with a treadmill stripped for parts lying next to a workbench with several draws. A lone dirty mattress lies on the ground, covered with stains.
- The DRM Resort lies before the entrance to the CORE. The Blook Memorial Fountain lies in the center. The restaurant serves pretty much just desert, mostly chocolate.
- The CORE is arranged differently to Undertale and is a shade of red rather than blue.
New Home[]
New Home changes slightly.
- The house is a light shade of purple and is full of cobwebs. Golden flowers litter the ground.
- The throne room has cobwebs covering the ground. Three thrones sit in front of a table emblazoned with the Delta Rune. Each is styled differently, one engraved with bones, one with stylized ghosts, and one with webs. The spider-styled one sits in the center.
- The true lab is a dark blue instead of green. Near the DT Extractor lies a strange machine covered in a tarp.
Additional Changes[]
- All characters who lacked unique voice blips would recieve them. (Napstablook, Muffet, etc)
- Overworld NPCs talk about major characters differently (Ruins Enemies are not afraid of Napstablook)
- Alphys drinks some nasty-looking yellow soda from Undyne's.
- Chara's EX and NEO forms have an angelic appearance.
- Muffet duel wields red swords, using them to break the MERCY button.
- Napstablook uses purple SOUL mode, activating it with purple tears.
- In red SOUL mode, Napstablook is unable to be killed.
Story[]
Trivia[]
- The author, SnasUndertable, has made several other AUs, both Undertale and Deltarune.
- The swaps were decided by putting the names of characters on a wheel and spinning it. The name, Underwhirl, makes reference to this.
- Sans and Papyrus still keep their speech patterns and fonts.
- Personalities DO NOT swap.
- The Triumvirate, the Underground's ruling council, was traditionally made up by three specific species of monsters: Skeletons, Ghosts, and Spiders.
- Sans works on his DT experiments with Chara and started them over family matters.
- Chara NEO does have an actual fight.
