This article contains information that is from a completed AU. All parts of the story have been released and are readable at any time.

The Soul of Love and its prequel The First Fallen Soul (respectively abbreviated to TSOL and TFFS) is a French AU, presented as a written story, created by EvaChara. The AU is based in a different timeline, where Asgore Dreemurr's poisoning by buttercups never happened, and where Chara is still alive. Now married and now Queen of the Underground alongside Asriel, Chara is the mother of a little girl named Asara, a human with a very special soul born from the union of a human and a monster, the Love Soul. The story takes place between the years 201X and 203X, therefore, characters such as Sans, Papyrus, Undyne, Alphys, or Mettaton are totally absent in this AU.

Characters[]

Undertale Characters[]

Asgore Dreemurr[]

In The First Fallen Soul, he is the king of the Underground, married to Toriel and father of Asriel, as well as the adoptive father of Chara. He is portrayed as friendly and wise, not hesitating to protect his adoptive daughter against the rumors of the monsters refractory to the presence of a human in the Underground, and does not hesitate either to confront Gerson who sees of a bad eye the adoption of the girl by the Dreemurr family. In The Soul of Love, his role is much more minor, since he appears only in chapter 1, The Crowning at the sides of his wife Toriel where he crowns his son king and is mentioned more discretely in the continuation of the story. At the end of the scenario, in Chapter 9, A New Family, it is stated that he is proposing himself as the replacement leader of the Royal Guard after Gerson's death.

Asriel Dreemurr[]

In The First Fallen Soul, Asriel, prince of the monsters, is the one who discovers Chara after her fall and takes her to his parents. He quickly befriends Chara and considers her his best friend. Although shy and clumsy at first, he shows a lot of willpower and does not hesitate to be very warm and generous with the human. His feelings gradually reveal themselves over time, and their relationship becomes a reality on Chara's birthday in Chapter 5, Happy Birthday! where he presents her with the Heart Locket. In The Soul of Love, Asriel is crowned king by his father Asgore. He appears much more confident than his wife Chara, often helping him overcome his anxieties, and makes a loving and fair father for Asara. Asriel appears to be brave and responsible, able to lead the monsters in an organized and calm manner and loses his temper very little. He is a king who is much appreciated by all, who cares deeply for his family, and does not hesitate to protect those he loves with bravery and honor.

Chara Dreemurr[]

In The First Fallen Soul, Chara was born in the Flower Village as Chara Sweetflower. She lives with her little sister Patience Sweetflower and her parents until she falls in Mount Ebott. Chara is a rather introverted, fearful, and very anxious little girl at first, showing obvious signs of stress and anxiety. Nevertheless, after the failure of her suicide attempt in Chapter 4, Chara's Despair, she gradually regains her self-confidence thanks to the unfailing support of her family and reveals a gentle, playful, and caring personality. She sometimes has fun making fun of Asriel and learns to appreciate living surrounded by people who care about her. In The Soul of Love, Chara has grown up, married to Asriel, and is crowned queen by Toriel herself. Although she has always retained a fearful and hesitant side, the new Queen of the Underground is a sincere, responsible and devoted person, whose kindness quickly conquered the hearts of monsters. Mother of Asara, she loves her daughter more than anything else and does her utmost so that she never has to suffer anxieties similar to hers. She attaches great importance to moral values, and always seems to care about doing what is right for her people. Although she does not enjoy fighting, she does not hesitate to bravely defend her people alongside Asriel in the final battle against the Hate Soul and has always supported her great friend, Dr. Gaster, in his experiments to save the kingdom.

Frisk[]

In The Soul of Love, Frisk appears as the main antagonist. He is, in this AU, the third human to have fallen into the Underground (the first being Chara and the second Mercy). Frisk is the bearer of a soul of Hate, black as night, and seems driven by a destructive rage that drives him to murder everyone in his path. He arrives in the Underground by the Ruins shortly after the burial of Mercy and is mentioned the first time at the end of Chapter 4, The one who slept behind the waterfall. Frisk is portrayed as an unscrupulous boy, killing out of vengeance and anger towards the monsters who killed his ancestors during the war, as well as against the other humans who abused his kindness on the surface, hence the little consideration he gives to Nemesis and Chara. Nevertheless, it is revealed at the end of the story that his soul was actually a corrupted Kindness soul, and is saved by Asara who returns the second half of his purified soul to him. Frisk, freed from the power of Hate, turns out to be a very sweet and sympathetic boy, a little clumsy and fearful and is adopted by the Dreemurr. He becomes a great friend of Asara and continues his life in the Underground without having any intention to come back to the surface.

Gerson[]

Captain of the Royal Guard in The First Fallen Soul and The Soul of Love, Gerson is one of the best warriors of the Underground. Survivor of the human-monster war, he is nicknamed "the hammer of justice". If in the prequel, he shows himself rather antipathetic towards Chara and refuses at the beginning that she remains in the Underground with the monsters, he ends up revising his opinion on her and will even apologize to her publicly on the day of her marriage with Asriel, in Chapter 6, Unexpected news... in The First Fallen Soul. Chara, not holding a grudge, forgives her willingly, and Gerson dedicates his life to the protection of the royal family. He is a brave warrior, extremely gifted in battle, who is not afraid to face the Hate Soul alone, and unfortunately ends up losing his own life.

Toriel Dreemurr[]

In The First Fallen Soul, Toriel is King Asgore's wife, mother of Asriel, and adoptive mother of Chara. Like her husband, she is very caring and loving to her children and is a queen much appreciated by her people. She is particularly close to Chara and cares very much about her condition. She also seems to be close to Dr. Gaster, whom she visits in the True Lab to have Chara examined (Chapter 3, Meeting Dr. Gaster) and thus, to allow him to discover the determination contained in human souls. She is also a great cook and several mentions of her dishes are made throughout history. In The Soul of Love, Toriel's role is very minor, like that of her husband Asgore, where she only appears in Chapter 1, The Crowning to crown Chara queen. Brief and rare allusions are made to her afterward and she does not play any particular role after the coronation. However, her behavior seems to have had some influence on Chara, who sometimes adopts the manners of her adoptive mother.

W.D. Gaster[]

Royal scientist recently promoted in The First Fallen Soul, he is credited with discovering the determination of human souls through his observations on Chara. Dr. Gaster is quite close to the royal family and his innovative experiments such as CORE have allowed him to become one of the most esteemed figures in the kingdom. However, Dr. Gaster's charismatic, handsome, gallant, and very bright character may show some weaknesses and awkwardness, especially in The Soul of Love, where he unwittingly puts Chara in danger by exposing her to the fragment of Hate Soul (Chapter 7, A Soul of Hate?) and thus get Asriel mad at him. However, Dr. Gaster remains a serious and reliable person and was chosen by Chara herself to be her daughter's godfather.

Added Characters[]

Asara Dreemurr[]

In The Soul of Love, Asara is the daughter of Asriel and Chara, with a unique soul, born from the fusion of a human soul and a monster soul. She is a small human with pink eyes and long brown hair similar to her mother's. She is dressed in a green kimono and has a fan, from which she rains swirls of magic petals. Asara has an innocent and playful personality and befriends everyone, humans and monsters alike. Her main friends are Mercy and then Frisk once he has been purified of Hate Soul. Although she may seem delicate and childish, Asara can be quite stubborn when she has an idea in mind, especially when she urges Gaster to let her interact with the fragment of Hate Soul (Chapter 7, A Soul of Hate?). She is a little girl who is full of vitality and energy, always positive, and whose soul has fascinating properties.

Mercy Dreemurr[]

In The Soul of Love, Mercy is the second human to fall, friend of Asara and soul of Curiosity. Mercy is a girl with long blond hair, with a sweet, empathetic and curious personality. She has been suffering from a serious illness since birth, and is also an orphan. At the orphanage, she learns the legend of the first human Chara from the other children, and, driven by curiosity, she goes to the mountain by herself to verify the basis of this rumour. There she falls by accident and lands in the Underground, near New Home, where she is discovered by Asara. Mercy is then adopted by the Dreemurrs and lives a peaceful existence in the Underground, until the day when the effects of her disease appear again, and plunge the girl in a slow agony. A few days later, Mercy died at the castle and her lilac soul, which had been entrusted to Dr. Gaster, was never found back. Despite her short life, Mercy won the hearts of humans and monsters alike, and her struggle with her illness made her a symbol of courage.

Nemesis[]

In The Soul of Love, Nemesis is the name given by Frisk to the corpse of Mercy brought back to life by the fragment of Hate Soul. Nemesis is not really a person, but rather a puppet controlled by Frisk's consciousness. Just like Frisk, Nemesis is brutal and unsympathetic, obeys Frisk's every word, and seems to be totally devoid of feelings. She is just another tool in Frisk's genocide, and Frisk himself is thinking of getting rid of her once his work is done. At the end, Nemesis is freed by Asara, unable to survive without the half-soul in her, and dies slowly.

Patience Sweetflower[]

Chara's little sister and Patience soul, she is mentioned only in the prequel The First Fallen Soul. Patience is a rather reserved and withdrawn girl, unlike her sister Chara who is much more active. She admires her elder sister a lot, and goes as far as lying to their parents to cover up Chara's escape to Mount Ebott. But Patience will regret this act for the rest of her life after she realizes what she did, and, unable to forgive herself, she will later withdraw herself in silence and try to bury this secret deep inside herself. The character of Patience shows the negative sides of the patience soul trait, through passivity, the inability to act, but also the hopeless expectation that one day Chara would return alive from Mount Ebott and that life would go on. In 203X, Patience Sweetflower became mayor of Flower Village, which has become a city since Chara's disappearance. Far from getting better, her life has only gotten worse, her heavy secret weighs heavily on her, and on the last page of her childhood diary (Epilogue), she asks forgiveness to all those she lied to for so many years, and finally puts words on her guilt.

Miscellaneous[]

  • Humans and monsters are considered to be compatible with each other, hence the birth of Asara.
  • The soul of Curiosity, represented by Mercy in the scenario, is a lilac colored soul, based on the knowledge of the enemy and the exposure of its weaknesses. Since the soul of Curiosity is referenced in the textbooks on souls (The Soul of Love, Chapter 4, The One Who Slept Behind the Waterfall), it is implied that Mercy is not alone in possessing such a soul. However, since Mercy never fights in the scenario, there is only a theoretical assumption about how it works during fights.
  • The Love Soul, at the center of the scenario, has only one representative in the person of Asara. The Love Soul is capable of destroying hostility and can purify a corrupt soul like the Hate Soul. It comes in the form of an inverted light pink heart, combining both the properties of human souls and those of monster souls.
  • The Hate Soul, as opposed to the Love Soul, results in the alteration of an ordinary human soul that would have been corrupted by negative feelings. The Hate Soul is portrayed as extremely brutal, acting with cruelty and apathy on the world around it, and is capable of absorbing the determination of the other souls. The only known way to defeat it is to purify it with the Love Soul so that it can return to its original state.

Trivia[]

  • The character Asara was first created for a friend of the author, and he liked it so much that EvaChara decided to create a whole universe around it. The first mention of Asara in the author's discussions with this person was on February 22, 2020.
  • The stories of The Soul of Love and The First Fallen Soul were inspired by elements from the author's life and her relationship to Undertale. Through Chara's story, the author takes a scriptural approach to her own experiences, her own fears, the people she met, and the messages of hope that Undertale gave her during a particularly difficult time in her life. She deals with this in more detail in the introduction to The Soul of Love.
  • The characters of Asriel and Chara in the AU represent in an analogical way the love relationship that was built between EvaChara and her actual boyfriend, a relationship that counted enormously in her personal life and to which she pays homage through the choice of this ship.
  • EvaChara was particularly aware that not everyone was going to enjoy her AU, and explains that the criticisms she faced were either directed against the choice of the ship Chara x Asriel, or against the absence of the most popular characters such as Sans and Papyrus.
  • The former name of The First Fallen Soul was The Soul of Love: Origin, but the author decided to change the name because it was too similar to The Soul of Love and she wanted to avoid confusion. The Wattpad cover of The First Fallen Soul still shows the former title.
