Undertoad is an AU created by LucasPucas, and co-created by Starfury and Patwhit01. This AU combines Undertale with the Super Mario universe and follows a sprite-comic format.

Five years after being trapped under Mt. Corona by the invading Shroobs, a young Toad journeys through the newly established underground kingdom, making friends (and enemies) along the way in hopes of saving them once and for all.

Undertoad was first published in 2016, and despite a few prolonged hiatuses, still regularly updates to this day. As of September 2020, remastered versions of Season One's chapters have started releasing, aiming to make the quality between seasons more cohesive and represent the team's creative visions much more accurately.

Characters[]

Main Characters[]

Toad[]

Toadprotag

Created by LucasPucas

  • The unnamed Toad, sometimes referred to as Shruby, is the protagonist of Undertoad. Like Undertale, they have no spoken dialogue and only speak through chosen responses. However, they express themselves commonly through body language and punctuation expressing their emotion.
  • Their mushroom head is actually a hat, and under it contains a large lock of hair that reaches the ground.[1]

Fiery the Flower[]

Fiery

Created by Patwhit

  • Fiery, also known as Fiery the Tutorial Flower, is a talking Fire Flower that Toad encounters on their journey. Giving Toad information, or a "tutorial" as they call it, on platforming mechanics, they appear to be helpful at first, but quickly change their demeanor once they get to the battle portion of their "tutorial".
  • With the remasters of Season One now in development, Fiery's role in the story is subject to change.

Kammy Koopa[]

UndertoadKammyOW

Created by Patwhit

  • Kammy Koopa, Bowser's right-hand assistant from Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, watches over the nameless Toad for the Ruins arc. She is shown to be very cold at first, but becomes warmer to Toad as the arc progresses. She cooks Toad a piece of Shroom Cake.
  • With the remasters of Season One now in development, Kammy's role in the story is subject to change.

Mario[]

Mario

Created by Galactigal

  • Mario is the first character encountered, as well as the deuteragonist of the Cool, Cool Forest arc. Due to the cold weather of Cool, Cool Forest, he dons a red jacket with a fluffy grey rim, along with a white polo shirt, blue jeans, and his usual work boots. Due to Mario's different portrayals over the years, Mario in Undertoad is a composite of all of them with some original traits mixed in. Unlike Luigi, Mario is a lot more helpful to Toad. He has protected Toad from danger on multiple occasions, even if it has put him at odds with characters like Luigi and Daisy. According to Kooper, Mario (as well as Luigi) are incredibly skilled at plumbing, being able to set up Sherborough's entire plumbing system in a single month.
  • While he does care for Luigi, he has no problem trying to straighten him out when he acts up. Unfortunately, he failed at convincing Luigi to stop chasing after Toad, reluctantly having to encourage Toad to do battle with Luigi themselves.

Luigi[]

LuigiL

Created by Patwhit

  • Luigi, Mario's younger brother, is the second character encountered, as well as the main antagonist of the Cool, Cool Forest arc. He dons his Mr. L outfit from Super Paper Mario. Throughout Toad's journey through Cool, Cool Forest, Luigi builds numerous contraptions in an attempt to apprehend Toad and bring them to Daisy.
  • Similar to Mario, Luigi's personality in Undertoad is a composite of all of his different portrayals over the years, along with original traits mixed in. While goofy and clumsy, Luigi puts up an act of false confidence as an intimidation tactic. He's also very emotional, breaking into tears when his confidence is broken and he realizes the consequences of his actions. As a reference to Super Mario 64 DS, Luigi has a big interest in poker, and is considered to be very good.

Daisy[]

UndertoadDaisy

Created by Patwhit

  • Daisy is the Commander of Waterwafer's guard division, and the main antagonist of Season Three. Donning a Phanto mask, her outfit consists of an orange vest with gold trims, a white low cut top and pants, a white belt with a flower insignia, and orange flats. Hotheaded and impatient, she doesn't seem to have the best relationship with Mario, considering him too "soft". On the contrary, she has been shown to care a lot for Luigi and his well-being, implied by Yoshi saying that Daisy's angry because Toad "made her boyfriend cry".

Yoshi[]

UndertoadYosh

Created by Patwhit

  • The Yoshi partner from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is a recurring character in both the Cool, Cool Forest arc and the Waterwafer Trench arc. They are first seen in Sherborough, where they make a joke about Toad's mushroom head. They return in Chapter 19, mentioning traveling to Waterwafer to "watch Daisy beat up pirates" and ask Toad if they want to come along. After answering no, the Yoshi kid walks off in a huff, asking Toad to come back to them if they "decide to be a lot less lame."
  • They return once again in Waterwafer Trench, interrupting Mario and Daisy's argument.

Pennington[]

UndertoadPennington

Created by Patwhit

  • Detective Pennington from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is a character introduced in the Waterwafer Trench arc. While they originally appeared in Sherborough's library as a normal NPC, they returned in Chapter 22, seeming to take on a much larger role in the story. Introducing himself at the end of the chapter, he explains that he's writing a profile piece on Daisy, as well as "uncovering a conspiracy" in the kingdom of Mt. Corona.

Dr. E. Gadd[]

  • Dr. E. Gadd is the presumed-dead Chief Scientist who played a key role in maintaining the peace between the two kingdoms when they first hid away underneath Mt. Corona. In spite the fact that he's gone now, the two kingdoms remain in alliance nonetheless.

Minor Characters[]

Napstaboo[]

  • Napstaboo is a shy Boo encountered in the Ruins arc, who just wants to be left alone. With the remasters of the Ruins arc coming eventually, Napstaboo has been confirmed to be replaced and demoted to a regular enemy.
  • Napstaboo is an obvious reference to Napstablook from Undertale, keeping his face and personality intact.

Parakarry[]

Parakarry

Created by Patwhit

  • Parakarry, the mailkoopa partner from Paper Mario, is the first miniboss fought in Cool, Cool Forest. He is encountered in a dark cave trying to find a lost letter, when he attacks Toad out of fear. He's seen to be very optimistic, and slightly aloof, as shown during the Poker game with Luigi, where he doesn't even view his cards. He has a signature catchphrase that he changes randomly, from "A postman's job is never done!" to "It's mail time, dude!", much to the dismay of Mario.

The Koopa Bros.[]

Koopa Bros.

Created by LucasPucas

  • The Koopa Bros., the bosses of the first chapter of Paper Mario, are the second minibosses fought in Cool, Cool Forest. Like their canon counterparts, they're very flashy and always ready for a fight. They attack in two stacked formations, and must be defeated by knocking down their formation with precise snowball throwing. The Koopa Bros. reappear again in Chapter 17 where they use their "Penalty Kick Formation" to barrage Toad with shells. They then switch to their shell tower formation from Paper Mario.
  • They return once again in Chapter 19 as part of the Poker game. Whenever they try to make a move, Yellow spoils their cards, much to the other's frustration. During the last game, Red becomes increasingly fed up with Luigi's antics, eventually snapping on him, causing Luigi to leave.

Jr. Troopa[]

Jr

Created by LucasPucas

  • Jr. Troopa, the mischievous Koopa kid from Paper Mario, is the third boss fought in Cool, Cool Forest. He is encountered when he attacks Toad for "stepping on his playground". He runs off when Mario comes to Toad's assistance, offering to "fix [Jr. Troopa] for ya". Jr. Troopa returns in Chapter 17, now sporting his trusty magic wand, and vows to enact revenge on Toad for their previous encounter. He launches a barrage of spiked balls and magic projectiles at Toad as they climb the mountain, ending up injured by one of the spiked balls himself.
  • Despite being older, his personality is still as childish as ever, as shown by his nicknames given to Mario and Toad, which are "Dweebus" and "Dweebus Junior, son of Dweebus" respectively.

Petey Piranha[]

Petey

Created by LucasPucas

  • Petey Piranha is the fourth and final miniboss fought in Cool, Cool Forest. After Toad is launched out of the secret platforming segment, they land in front of a sleeping Petey Piranha, who awakens in a fit of rage and attacks. Petey returns in Chapter 17 along with the other minibosses, this time hurling spiked balls across a bridge which Toad must dodge. Its shown that Petey has a soft side, as it is shown he doesn't really want to hurt Toad during his segment on the Challenge Cliff. He returns for the Poker game in Chapter 19 as well, where he's as silent as usual.

Kooper[]

  • Kooper from Paper Mario runs Sherborough's shop, encountered in Chapter 15. He sells four different items, but tells Toad that he gradually gets more stock whenever he finds "cool stuff", and offers his phone number.
  • Kooper apparently advertises his shop very aggressively, suggested by the giant stack of advertisements inside the Mario Bros' house.

Unintroduced Characters[]

Pauline[]

  • Pauline is the mayor of Sherborough. She's currently on a "business trip".
  • Unlike the other unintroduced characters, Pauline does have an official design[2], posted to the official Undertoad blog.

Donkey Kong[]

  • Donkey Kong supposedly owns a banana shop in the Ruins in order to make a profit.

Peach[]

  • Peach, former princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, is implied to be some sort of scientist. Not much is known because her at the moment.
  • According to Mario, Peach no longer retains her status of "Princess". It is also shown in some of his dialogue that they are in a relationship.

Bowser[]

  • Bowser, king of the Koopa Kingdom, is now king of Mt. Corona.
  • Kammy and Bowser have drifted apart for reasons yet unknown.

Location Changes[]

Ruins[]

The Ruins are now blue, to match the popular color scheme of the Underground levels from Mario games.

Cool, Cool Forest[]

Cool, Cool Forest is a cold area home to the citizens of Sherborough. It is very mountainous and filled with platforming segments.

Sherborough[]

Sherborough is Cool, Cool Forest's main town. It features a shop run by Kooper, a bar run by Podley, and the home of the Mario Bros. It is a fairly large and populous town, home to over a dozen different NPCs.

Luigi's Challenge Cliff[]

Luigi's final challenge before going into battle is a gauntlet on the side of a cliff face, aptly named Luigi's Challenge Cliff. It is filled with puzzles and action sequences against the previous Cool, Cool Forest minibosses. A scenic view of a large delta and mountains off in the distance can be seen from atop it. Luigi's Challenge Cliff leads into Waterwafer Trench.

Waterwafer Trench[]

Waterwafer Trench is the third main area of Undertoad, as well as the main setting of Season 3. From the appearances of minecart rails and crystals embedded into the walls, the area is implied to be some sort of mining facility.

Additional Changes[]

  • Jumping is a new mechanic added, for solving puzzles by breaking blocks, or, shown in Part 13, for secret platforming segments.
  • Badges are a new mechanic added, similar to how they work in the Paper Mario games. The first badge, Happy Heart, is given to Toad by Mario after the fight with Jr. Troopa. It works the same as it does in its original game.

Trivia[]

  • It is not yet known who "replaces Mettaton", but the creator, LucasPucas, has stated multiple times that the Mettaton replacement is not Waluigi, due to large amounts of people trying to pass off Waluigi being Mettaton as canon.
  • It is also repeatedly stated that both Fawful[3] and Dimentio[4] will not make an appearance at all.
  • Undertoad actually does not use the "role" system of character replacements, and the creators ask people not to use them when discussing the AU.[5]
  • Undertoad is more focused on the Mario RPGs, as seen by the abundance of Paper Mario characters, and the prominence of the Shroobs from the Mario & Luigi series.
  • Undertoad features its own soundtrack, mostly composed by its creator LucasPucas, featuring classic songs from Mario games reworked into fitting songs for the comic.
  • Undertoad's position in the Super Mario timeline has been left vague on purpose (for now), left up for readers to figure out the cut-off point[6]. However, it is confirmed to play after Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door.[7]
  • The Bob-Omb NPC that appears in Chapter 23 is a reference to Wick, a custom Rivals of Aether character made by Undertoad creator LucasPucas.
