Buttontale is an AU by Geminiwishes crossing over a fan (as well as the author's) interpretation of Underswap with the universe of the dark fantasy children's novella Coraline written by British author Neil Gaiman.
The story takes place after the death of Swap!Sans and Swap!Papyrus' father (Doctor W.D. Gaster in the AU's canon). After their father's death, the two brothers struggled to afford living in their current home, and so they (or more accurately, the older brother, being Swap!Papyrus) decide(s) to sell it and move out of Snowdin entirely to seek a more affordable home for themselves.
Swap!Sans, being around ten years old when the story takes place, is being taken care of by the older brother, Swap!Papyrus. Pressured to do his best to afford their new home, Swap!Papyrus fails to pay any attention to his younger brother due to his poor time management. Bored, Swap!Sans finds a door through which he travels to the Mirror World, similar to the way the protagonist of Coraline does.
Characters[]
Underswap Sans[]
This AU has no human protagonist. The role of a protagonist is instead taken on by the previously mentioned Swap!Sans, who can be easily compared to the protagonist of Coraline. All of the other Underswap (or Undertale) characters are crossovers between ones from the original novel by Neil Gaiman (or its film adaptation) and Undertale/Underswap ones.
Underswap Papyrus[]
Swap!Sans' big brother, as well as his legal guardian. His personality is unclear, and can be compared to neither the most popular depiction of Underswap Papyrus or the original Undertale's Sans. In the Mirror World, he plays a role similar to the one the Other Mother plays in Coraline.
Other characters[]
- Asriel replaces Wybie, Toriel replacing his Grandmother.
- Muffet replaces Mr. Bobinsky.
- Mettaton and Napstaton (from Underswap) replace Ms. Spink and Ms. Forcible.
- Flowey is, quite simply, The Cat. Unlike in the original Underswap, the creator refrains from using Annoying Dog or the Temmie Shopkeeper as both are based on real people.
- Chara, Classic Sans and Underfell Sans take on the role of the Ghost Children.
